Contemporary Conversation with Peter Schjeldahl

Join us for the next Contemporary Conversation as we welcome Peter Schjeldahl, renowned New Yorker art critic. He will take the stage with Marc Mayer, National Gallery Director and CEO, for a freewheeling discussion about art, the art world, and the role of the critic.

Free admission. Seats in the Auditorium will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. In English. Simultaneous French interpretation is available, if a request is made to interp@gallery.ca before February 1, 2018.

Peter Schjeldahl is an art critic, poet, and educator. He is the art critic at The New Yorker, having joined the magazine in 1998 after working as the art critic at The Village Voice. During his long and celebrated career his writing has also appeared in ARTnews, The New York Times, Artforum, Art in America, Vogue, and Vanity Fair. Schjeldahl has won numerous awards including the Clark Prize for Excellence in Arts Writing from the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute; the Frank Jewett Mather Award from the College Art Association, for excellence in art criticism; and a Guggenheim Fellowship. He is the author of four books of art criticism including 2008’s Let’s See: Writings on Art from the New Yorker. Peter Schjeldahl has also written several books of poetry, and taught in the Department of Visual and Environmental Studies at Harvard University.

One of America’s most influential art critics, his writing on art is fresh, clear, and personal. Schjeldahl writes for all readers and seeks to help us engage with works from across the spectrum of art.
